Give Up Your Seat on This Day

rosa_parks

On this day in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat in the colored section of the city bus in Montgomery, Alabama.

The white section of the bus was full and the bus driver ordered her to give up her seat to a white passenger.

On this day, Rosa Parks was tired of giving in. She was arrested and put in prison.

On this day, December 1, Rosa Parks ignited the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Right Movement.

It’s a Beautiful Day

We all remember where we were.

I was working as a consultant for SunTrust Bank in Richmond, Virginia.

My wife called me at the office. The phones were ringing at every desk.

By the time we congregated around a small television in the cafeteria, the South Tower was in flames.

Thirty-five minutes later, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. The attack in Virginia occurred precisely 100 miles north of where we were located.

You Complete Me

“Show me the money!”

You probably can name that film already.

The 1995 sports-romance movie Jerry Maguire starring Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding, Jr, and Renee Zellweger spawned several other famous one-liners:

“Help me help you.” “You had me at hello.”

And “You complete me.”

The latter quote has the same message in the first letter from the Apostle John!

Recognize Your Talking Donkey

When it comes to talking donkeys, I’m probably not the only one who thinks first about the Shrek movies.

Eddie Murphy’s voiceover for Donkey is Hollywood brilliance.

Donkey: “Okay, let me get this straight: you gonna go fight a dragon and rescue a princess just so Farquaad will give you back your swamp, which you only don’t have ’cause he filled it full of freaks in the first place. Is that about right?”

Shrek: “You know what? Maybe there’s a good reason donkeys shouldn’t talk.”

Do We Have Love Backwards?

FullTimeChristianity_LoveBackwards

I had love all backwards.

I believed I could demonstrate love just like the Apostle Paul famously outlined in 1 Corinthians 13 (and is now read at most weddings including my own):

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
