Starting the Day on My Knees

I assume you have a morning routine too. Probably one that is a lot more challenging than mine.

If it involves getting kids started in the morning, you deserve a daily award.

Whatever the drill, you’ve made it a habit. And that’s a good thing.

What was missing in my quick morning routine was prayer.

Taking a break from daily responsibilities is ok.

Living a meaningless and constant escape from life responsibilities is a tragedy.

Lacking focus on what matters is an area I’ve personally struggled.

Am I alone in this battle?

Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, appropriately advised his readers to put first things first.

How to Start Your Day with a Grateful Heart

Mother Teresa once remarked, “There is more hunger for love and appreciation in this world than for bread.”

On one occasion, I tried to count how many times I said thanks during the day.

I counted every spoken thanks in the car, every email I closed with the word thanks, every thank you I uttered to the person holding the door, and so on.

By 5 pm, I had said thank you at least 92 times. I no longer try to count, but I target at least 100 expressions of gratitude every day.

Praying should be formal, right? Lots of “thou’s” and “art’s?

That must be the key to better prayers!

Going to Protestant churches my whole life has certainly formalized my prayer vocabulary.

I’ve tried it at home. Even on the ball field with my team.

After all, that’s how we talk everyday to our family and friends. Isn’t it?

Oh wait…

I Need a Prayer Therapist

I’m fairly confident my weakest link as a Christian is that I don’t pray very well.

And as a result, I don’t pray often enough.

Or is it the other way around?

Regardless, I know I need prayer guidance.

Praying usually feels… well, awkward.

I want to pray, but I don’t know what to say. I want to pray, but I get easily interrupted. I want to pray, but I feel some of my previous prayers have been ignored by God.

Do you ever feel the same way?
